Disable Visual Pop-up Notifications and Keep Sound Alerts

Disable Visual Notifications

When Auto Refresh's Detect Keyword feature finds a matching word on the page, it can alert you in two ways: a desktop pop-up box from the operating system, and a sound played in the tab. If you want sound alerts only — and no visual pop-up — there is a single checkbox that controls the desktop notification.

The option is stored per browser profile, so a freshly installed copy of Auto Refresh starts with the desktop notification enabled until you turn it off. That is also why the same installation can behave differently across separate browsers or profiles.

How to turn off the desktop pop-up

  1. Open the Auto Refresh popup.
  2. Switch to the Detect Keyword tab.
  3. Uncheck "Notify the user" — this is the option that produces the desktop pop-up notification when a keyword is found.
  4. Leave "Play sound when keyword detected" checked so the audio alert continues.
  5. Click Save.

Why the setting can differ across browsers or profiles

  • "Notify the user" is stored in the browser profile, not synced across devices, so each Auto Refresh installation keeps its own copy of the setting.
  • If one installation is silent and another shows pop-ups, open the Detect Keyword tab on each one and compare them side by side — the difference will be on this one row.
  • After unchecking the option, the system pop-up will not appear again. Only the sound alert (if enabled) will play.

If desktop notifications still appear after saving, check the browser-level notification permission for the extension and confirm the setting has actually saved — the indicator at the top of the popup should display "Save" greyed out when there are no pending changes.
